Default Episode 2 -- Sophos

Be patient with me, folks. I'm waiting on one more bit of audio that has to be edited into the podcast, and as soon as that arrives I'll fire it off.

MJCP and Sean McNamara talk with Paul Ducklin, head of technology, Asia-Pacific for Sophos anti-virus. The discussion is mainly concerned with security and anti-virus. Not only for Mac OS X but also for Windows, and of course for Windows users coming over to Mac OS X. It turns out very little of the security threat is actually "viruses".

Check it out.

Haven't done the fancy schmancy slideshow thing yet -- that can wait until morning I think.

Downloading now - it didn't show up automagically in iTunes however - I had to manually go and start the download.

The audio quality was a lot better in this one.

Hmmm, still not sure I'm convinced about virus protection But I like regular reminders to practice safe surfing.

Excellent podcast #2 MJCP, and very interesting guest.

I'm seeing a trend develop after only two podcasts that differentiate MTP from alternative podcasts, and that is that rather than the team waffling on about themselves (which is fine in moderation) or news that has already been in every RSS feed over the past week, the MTP podcasts are very informative, educational, and give an insight into the behind the scenes workings of the two guest companies so far. For example, the guy from Sophos came across as really knowing his stuff and whereas in the past I may have dismissed Sophos software because of price, I am now more inclined to reconsider.

I also like the fact that the news you have talked about is mixed with your own opinion as opposed to simply reporting, and possibly the real gem of the podcast for me was the brief discussion right at the end on backing up and the use of Time Capsule. It was obviously not intended to be a topic as it came in a final thought from Sean, and this was what probably made it more real and for me, it came across as very genuine advice that there is really no excuse anymore for not having work backed up. Excellent stuff.

Very good security podcast, I have recommended it to some switchers I know. Keep it up, your efforts are appreciated.

I have a problem with episode 2. I downloaded it directly onto my iPhone via the iTunes Wi Fi Music Store. The podcast appears as a video podcast instead of a regular audio one. It plays as a video podcast too, this means that I can't go off and do other things while listening on my iPhone because the podcast stops playing, I can't turn the screen off either because the video will stop playing. Worst part is that if I do leave the screen on, it turns itself off after the set time, so I have to keep prompting the iPhone to make sure it stays on (or change the sleep timer settings).

I have not tried listening in iTunes, it might not be a video file. I actually downloaded the podcast twice, once on my PowerBook and once on my iPhone (I was too lazy to sync it). I'll look into it in the morning.

That is weird. There were problems with Episode 1 when downloaded directly to phones as well, but I thought I'd managed to fix the cause of those with Episode 2. Let me know how you go with the version downloaded to your PowerBook.
